Many of us are animal lovers but regardless, many of the species of wildlife in the Withlacoochee State Forest that may be adversely affected by this landfill are vital to Hernando County's economy in bringing tourism, monitoring endangered species populations and building wildlife habitat. Residents and tourists alike see many of the Forest's beautiful species on a daily basis which is part of what makes this place so amazing and such a treasure. Why else would the Withlacoochee State Forest be named "One of the Top 10 Coolest Places You've Never Been in North America"? There truly are not enough places like this left in Florida let alone in the U.S. We must protect these areas not just for us - but for the generations to come.
But there's another issue with Wildlife...
While we want to keep many of the wildlife in this area safe and from harm - there are other species that become overpopulated and a nuisance in areas surrounding landfills. These animals can include rats, mice, birds, raccoons and possums who scavenge and nest in the debris. These species are prone to disease and can threaten the survival of the other wildlife in the area not too mention become a serious problem to homeowners and their livestock and domestic animals. Some may consider this issue to me minuscule - but do the research. This issue can become just as serious as the others.
