Research & Evidence

Research Paper - Click to download the  PDF

Please click on the above link to open the PDF of our comprehensive research paper that was sent to FDEP.  FDEP told us in the beginning
that we needed to fight the landfill only based on "science and facts".  We did that with the St. Pete Times even complimenting that our work
was like that of a "doctoral dissertation".  This paper sets the stage for just the basics of how dangerous and serious this project is to our
County, our families, our water and our livelihoods.

Letter from Dr. Richard Salkowe on the issues of the proposed C&D Landfill - Click to download a PDF

Dr. Richard Salkowe is a Hillsborough County resident who owns property in Hernando County.  He boards his horse next to the
Withlacoochee State Forest so that he may enjoy the Croom both on horseback and hiking. After being in private practice specializing in foot
surgery, he decided to return to school and obtain a degree in Geography and Environmental Science.  Rich is correlating his medical
knowledge with environmental issues such as catastrophes, doctor care, and especially environmental justice issues.  Some of his works
have been published and he was recently invited to speak on Natural Disaster and Human Health by the US Environmental Protection Agency
in Washington, DC.  Dr. Salkowe, as a scientist, has significant concerns that this landfill will adversely affect Hernando County.  Please see
his letter in the link above in which he wrote to County and State officials to ask that this project be denied for numerous reasons.

We spent hours documenting the obvious wildlife, roadway and habitat issues associated with this proposed landfill.  This was necessary as
the landfill applicant/operators decided to not disclose the plethora of Gopher Tortoise holes that are along the proposed easement and even
on the site.  In addition, we realized that approximately 35 feet of dense forest habitat will be destroyed should the easement to the landfill
be approved.  While the landfill applicant/operators also chose to claim that they are "landlocked" in their
application to forestry and
therefore must be allowed this easement, they are in fact not landlocked as there are at least 2 other access points to the landfill site.
